The struggle is the juice

That’s the funny thing about life. Some of us were designed to hurt more, designed to love more deeply, to need more joy. Our emotional capacity lies along a spectrum, each of us having been built with a different point of origin along that spectrum.

Emotion is fuel. Right or wrong, good or bad, it is the currency of all action. It is our driving force. Eliminate it and you take away all meaning to life. To live a life bereft of passion is to live devoid of all those things which truly matter.

From Nick: I feel like I lost my way or my passion to working out

I recently found your YouTube channel which led me to your website. I am about to turn 38 and up until a few years ago, I was quite active either as a runner or in CrossFit. However, a few years ago I feel like I lost my way or my passion to working out. I get sore more quickly, my recovery is longer and while I have a good metabolism, I don’t fuel my body or mind for optimal performance. All this being said, I made it a goal of mine to compete in an Ironman in 2019. Do you have a recommendation for both a training regimen and what do you feel is the most important mindset when training?

Body soreness is not a function of age as much as it is diet. Same goes for recovery and metabolism. This is congruent with your statement about not fueling yourself properly.

Start with a 3 day water fast to re-calibrate your body and mind.

Research and plan to start eating an anti-inflammatory diet for as long a term as you can. If you fail at it, cycle it one week at a time.

No alcohol, no added sugar, no sugar substitutes, no soda at all, no nicotine, get rid of all over the counter medications as best you can. Get 8 hours of sleep. Get away from anyone and everything that brings “noise” into your life as best you can.

Just about any Ironman training schedule will work. Find an easier one. The name of the game is consistency and avoidance of injury. Its less about the program and more about the attitude and mindset. All training is 85% psychological and 15% the mechanics. I’ve done Ironmans after not biking or swimming for over a year. I finished because I believed I could just on run training alone and that made all the difference.

The biggest reason people fail is not because they are incapable, it’s because they’re uninspired. They lack a good enough reason why they want to achieve some goal. A mental hack is to submerge yourself in environments and among people who are doing what you want to do. Do this and you’ll find yourself naturally drawn into action. We’re designed to be competitive, it is built-in to each and every one of us. Start small and work your way up. When you start seeing others do what you want to do, the ones that have less ability, less skills and less gifts than you, but whom succeed – you’ll be driven from within.

From Nick: I can’t thank you enough for taking time to respond to my email.  Your statement about being uninspired instead of incapable really speaks to how I feel about myself as it relates to working out or being more mindful of how I am fueling my body.  I often ask myself, “what am I standing in my own way of” and perhaps part of that answer is not being inspired.

I have done multi-day fasts, either water or juice (made from a juicer), and that has re-calibrated my system and I noticed that areas in my body that were sore/achy/inflamed all but disappeared.  I was thinking about doing a multi-day fast in January and this is the inspiration I needed to get me on a better path.
